Peng Wei - Embroidered
Plum Blossoms Gallery

Date: June 18 ¡V July 3, 2004

The directors of Plum Blossoms Gallery take great pleasure in presenting ¡¥Embroidered¡¦, the first solo exhibition of shoes and court costume paintings by the Beijing-based Chinese female artist, Peng Wei. By painting the ancient Chinese costumes with traditional Chinese ink and colour, Peng Wei evokes the memories of the past, searching for the cultural myth in modern Chinese society. ¡¥Embroidered ¡V Recent Paintings by Peng Wei¡¦ will be on view at the gallery from June 18 ¡V July 3, 2004.

Over 30 pieces of robes and shoes will be showing in the exhibition. Delicate and elegant as they are, ancient costumes have always been a symbol of Chinese cultural tradition. But as time passes by, that materialism and consumerism gradually change the Chinese culture, Western style costumes like high-heeled shoes substitute the traditional ones, occupying many women¡¦s heart. By making contrast between modernism and traditionalism, Peng Wei is trying to search for the loss of our cultural identity in today¡¦s society.

Born in 1974 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Peng Wei graduated from Nankai University with a BA in Art in 1997 and later earned a MPhil in 2000. Peng Wei is currently an editor for ¡§Art Magazine Now¡¨ in China. Her recent works have been shown in Beijing and Guangzhou.
