Ming Dynasty Brocade Makhara Dragon
Antique Chinese mid-Ming dynasty polychrome silk brocade panel worked against a dark green ground with a four-clawed Makhara snouted dragon with a foliate tail rising above a swirling sea and clutching mountain shafts that pierce that sea within its claws. A floral border sets off three sides of the panel which might have been designed as one side of a ceremonial saddle hanging or trapping. Mid-Ming dynasty, circa 1525
66 x 55 cm, 1525
